Acetyl-L-Carnitine is a form of the amino acid L-Carnitine. Acety-L-Carnitine has an acetyl group which contributes to the production of acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter required for mental function. As people age the production of acetylcholine decreases.
Clinical trials have shown that acetyl-l-carnitine delays the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Other clinical trials have shown that acetyl-l-carnitine may be helpful for people with degenerative cerebellar ataxia, which is a loss of muscular coordination caused by disease in the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls muscle tone and balance).
